($$$$) Just before the dolphins on the road to la Ropa you’ll find Villa Carolina Hotel. There are 7 private and beautifully constructed luxury villas across the street from The Tides but a bit cheaper in price. Because the villas are located on a hillside, they have cool ocean breezes throughout the day. They are easy walking distance to the beach, and a longer, scenic walk into the center of town.

just the facts, ma'am: All of the villas have fully-equipped kitchens, king size beds, marble bathrooms, air conditioning, ceiling fans, telephones, satellite TV, televisions, VCRs, CD/cassette players and safety deposit boxes. The garden suites have a view of the gorgeous swimming pool and garden area, and the master suites and grand house have ocean views. The two master suites have private jacuzzis. The grand house is truly grand, located on the top two levels of the house and features an infinity pool in the living room, a recreation room with a 42” tv and sound system, and the enormous gourmet kitchen is a cooks paradise with two refrigerators/freezers, a professional-size stove and a pizza oven. Hotel Villa del Sol is one of our most expensive luxury hotels in Zihuatanejo, but as they say, you get what you pay for. There are 35 rooms and 35 suites, each uniquely designed in Mexican adobe-inspired architecture and include terraces or balconies and all the amenities you expect from a luxury hotel. The staff is exceedingly friendly and attentive, and most speak English. Hotel Villa del Sol is located on the beach at Playa La Ropa, and many people who stay there never even leave the premises their entire vacation except for a dip in the bay and a stroll on the beach.

($$$) If you find yourself in Troncones in the mood for a meal, we highly recommend that you check out Tropic of Cancer. The restaurant tables surround the pool, and are on the beach, and all are shady and breezy. You can swim in the pool while waiting for your meal, or take a walk on the beach and play in the ocean. The menu includes a variety of Mexican seafood, chicken and beef dishes, and all are delicious.

just the facts, ma'am: The restaurant at Tropic of Cancer is open daily except Tuesdays for lunch and dinner. Wireless internet also available -- just ask for the password for access.

don't miss: The Tropic of Cancer takes a decidedly modern twist on camaronillas: they are made with light and crispy phyllo dough, and comes with a soy and garlic dipping sauce. They're unique, delicious, and definitely not to be missed.

($$$) As you enter the shady foyer of Hotel Villa Mexicana, you can hear the soothing sounds of a nearby water fountain, and immediately feel your body relaxing and cooling down. Hotel Villa Mexicana has 64 rooms with either two queen-sized beds or one king and one queen bed each. ($$) Popeye’s is located on Playa Larga and is a great option for afternoon fun in the sun. The restaurant and children’s pool is located on the beach side of the road, while tables, lawn chairs and the adult sized pool is located across the road. The restaurant serves a variety of seafood and the staff is happy to serve you at either location.

just the facts, ma'am: Popeye’s is open daily from 10 am (more or less) until 7 pm (more or less). Shaded parking, adult and children pools available

don't miss: The camarones supremo are large shrimp wrapped in bacon and grilled and the brochettas hawaiiana is fish, shrimp, pineapple, and red bell pepper on a skewer. Served with rice, both are delicious and not to be missed.

meet me @: To get to Popeye’s take the road to Playa Larga from Highway 200 (on the way to the airport) and turn left when you reach the frontage road on the beach. Popeye’s is a few restaurants down, parking on the left and the restaurant on the right.

($$) Restaurant and bar, La Langosta, is a great option for an afternoon of fun in the sun on Playa Larga. Located right on the beach, they serve a variety of seafood, made in so many different ways that everyone is bound to find a favorite. The menu includes local dishes such as tiritas (tiny strips of raw fish in lime juice and chopped onion) and their version of pescado a la talla called talla adobada (a whole fish wrapped in foil and cooked with mild seasonings). Walk on the beach, play in the pool or hang out in a hammock while spending the afternoon drinking cool cervezas or limonadas and watching the dolphins swim by.

just the facts, ma'am: open daily from 10 am to 6:30/7 pm. Kids' pool and adult pools included. The jukebox can get a bit loud at times, but they are always happy to turn it down when asked.

don't miss: the camaronillas are made with fresh shrimp, a gently spicey red sauce and wrapped in masa (used for making corn tortillas). The breaded shrimp has just a light crunch and is delicious.
