culture

This is a broad category that could technically include just about everything on WeHeartZihua -- all of the restaurants, hotels, and activities in the Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa area are quintessentially Mexican in either its origin or execution. We've chosen a select few places to list here that will give you a rich introduction to local history, tradition, and ways of life. We trust you will be inspired to continue the cultural exploration throughout our website and throughout Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa.

($$ - $$$$) Opened in May of 2005, Casa Del Arte is a welcome addition to Zihuatanejo Centro for both tourists and locals alike. Featuring oil and watercolor paintings by several local artists, the gallery provides visitors a way to take exquisitely-rendered scenes of Zihua home with them.

just the facts, ma'am: Note new hours for Galería Casa del Arte during the summer "green" season: Monday-Friday, 10 am - 2 pm & 5 pm - 7 pm and Saturdays, 10 am - 3 pm (closed on Sunday). With hand-painted greeting cards for just 35 pesos and works on canvas for anywhere from 200 pesos to 19,000 pesos, the gallery has a piece of art for everyone to cherish. For larger pieces (some spanning over 9 feet!), DHL shipping can be arranged through the gallery to the US and Canada.

don't miss: The owner and primary artist is Andres Gurumeta Menendez, a celebrated Mexican artist who has had his work shown in Mexico, South America, the Caribbean, New Zealand, Europe, the US, and Canada. He has also been commissioned to do paintings and murals for half a dozen Club Intrawest locations. Two other local artists are: Celerino Garcia Suazo and Hugo Ayvar Sanchez. Both men have been included in group and solo exhibitions throughout Mexico and internationally and their work can be seen in many fine restaurants, hotels, and homes in the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo area.

meet me @: the pedestrian street of Cuauhtémoc at #19, next to Cine Paraíso.
