($$$) During the day, Bandido's takes advantage of its location directly across from the Artisan's Market to offer a sampling of traditional Mexican food and refreshing beers and cocktails to passersby. At night, they ramp it up with live music by some of the best local and imported bands featuring popular Mexican music, standard Cuban salsa favorites, and the occasional jazz tune. The waiters can double as dance partners and, many nights, you'll find locals celebrating special occasions here and welcoming you to join la fiesta.

just the facts, ma'am: open from 11 am - 2 am, 7 days a week during high season (closed on Sundays during green season). With close proximity to where most cruise ship passengers disembark, there can be quite a lunch time crowd on cruise ship days. Live music often doesn't start until 11:30 so plan to meet up for cocktails somewhere else if you don't want to pay "live music" prices beforehand. Credit cards are accepted with a 400 peso minimum.

don't miss: the bartenders make a brisk mojito, a mean margarita, and can serve up just about any cocktail you order with their broad bar selection.

($$$$) Bogart’s restaurant goes all out with the Casablanca theme (plus photos of Bogie himself thrown in for good measure) without going over the top, still maintaining the atmosphere of a cool, luxurious restaurant. The outer walls are lines with spacious booths and flowing sheer curtains, and the central part of the restaurant has a beautiful water feature and a grand piano. The food is delicious, and always elegantly presented. The piano music in the background completes the "Play it again, Sam" experience.

just the facts, ma'am: Bogart’s is open for dinner every night. It is one of the only restaurants in the area that is completely air-conditioned. Live piano music every night.

don't miss: The lobster and avocado appetizer arrives in an ice bowl, but is so delicious that it is guaranteed to be gone before the bowl melts. The duck is roasted with figs and is a delightful dish every time.

($$-$$$) Yes, there is a creperia in Zihuatanejo! Café Mandarina specializes in both savory and dessert crepes in addition to being one of the first locations to serve strong-brewed coffee and espresso drinks. The menu doesn't stop there, though! There is a full selection of Mexican tortas and other traditional fare, contintental breakfasts, large entree salads, and cakes. The owners, Carlos and Esperanza, are genuine people who get to know their customers and are constantly working to improve the cafe through menu changes, decor improvements, and training their employees in good customer service.

just the facts, ma'am: open daily from 9 am until midnight. There is free wifi for paying customers; simply ask for the password from any of the staff to log on.

don't miss: the savory crepes are very filling and the dessert crepes are almost too big! In fact, I've never managed to finish one. The chef's salad with a honey mustard dressing is especially satisfying on a hot day.

($$-$$$) A recent dinner at The Captain's Daughter restaurant began quite naughtily with the sinful combination appetizer platter but ended with redemption in the form of entree-sized salads. The appetizers included authentic (and picante!) Buffalo chicken wings, jalapeño poppers with cream cheese, mozzarella sticks, onion rings, and french fries accompanied with various dipping sauces. It was more than enough for 2 people and if you're planning on eating an entree, you'll want to share with a whole table so you don't get stuffed. The salads are meals in themselves with ingredients ranging from blackened chicken to mango & toasted pecans to cheeses to a standard (but filling) "house" salad. Don't forget the main courses that include certified Angus beef burgers, BBQ ribs served with sweet corn, pastas, a roasted vegetable sandwich, and tuna steak.

just the facts, ma'am: Enjoy drinks and dinner while checking your email on your laptop with free wifi in the restaurant. This new restaurant is filling up fast but with a dozen tables and 4 seats at the bar, you can usually find a place to squeeze in. Wine is sold at 40-60 pesos/glass and 220-265/bottle. The appetizers run 25-60 pesos (with the massive combination platter for 130 pesos) and dinner can range from a 35 peso vegetarian sandwich to a 10 oz rib eye steak for 160 pesos.

don't miss: As co-owner, Kenny, warned us while hauling over our appetizers, "forget the diet!" Many of the foods on the menu, especially the pub-style appetizers are gloriously breaded and deep fried. However, there are quite a few healthy options on the menu including large complex salads, vegetarian sandwiches, and tuna steak. Margaritas are the house cocktail, made strong but quite reasonably priced at 35 pesos.

($$) For fans of chili, this recent creation of Canadian Deborah (of "Mamma Norma & Deborah" fame) is the place to be. This colorful restaurant serves a wide variety of Mexican and American/Canadian food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, most of it leaning in the direction of Tex-Mex (which is generally not readily available in Mexico). Vegetarian dishes, including vegetarian chili, are also included on the menu.

just the facts, ma'am: open daily from 7:30 am to 11 pm. Choose between the airy sidewalk or shaded indoor seating with quite possibly the most complete collection of chili- and bean-themed décor!

don't miss: a must-have is Deborah’s clever creation, the chili chili, which is a chili relleño filled with chili. Absolutely delicious! Also, the nacho supreme salad and the BLT salad with honey mustard dressing are quickly becoming customer favorites.

($) If you’re walking down Paseo de la Boquita just past Plaza Kioto on your way to the Centro and you think you smell fried chicken, you’re right. Country Fried Chicken is a small restaurant just across from the canal and serves some of the best fried chicken in Zihua (outside of my kitchen, natch). You can order pieces and side orders a la carte, or you can get a dinner packages with chicken, cole slaw and mashed potato with gravy.

don't miss: For an extra special treat, don’t miss out on an order of chimichangas -- 3 for 30 pesos -- fried tortillas filled with shredded chicken and other yummy stuff.

($$-$$$) Many of the regulars simply call this new Zihua favorite, "World Food," which is an apt description as any. The menu changes nightly with dishes coming from Malaysia, Thailand, India, the Mediterranean, and even the occasional proper British fish and chips. The 3 dishes - typically one seafood, one meat, and one vegetarian - offered each night reflect the freshest local ingredients mixed with owner/chef, Shunik's imagination. Desserts are simple treats - often a homemade ice cream or mousse - made daily by Sabrina that compliment the spicy, complex flavors of the entrees.

just the facts, ma'am: open from 6 until 10 pm, Tuesdays through Saturday. The small restaurant can get very crowded and sometimes the food is devoured so quickly that late-arriving patrons are served last minute concoctions from the leftover bits and pieces. Don't worry, though, sometimes these improvised dishes are even better than the planned menu!

don't miss: on slow nights, Shunik comes out of the kitchen with a bottle of tequila to share and the didgeridoo to pass around. Unfortunately, the restaurant has become so popular, there aren't many slow nights! This season brings a cocktail menu, a wider variety of wines, and occasional guest chefs.

($$-$$$) Pass through the non-descript archway on Avenue Morelos in Zihuatanejo, and you enter a spacious, courtyard setting that is Restaurant El Pueblito. The garden and the sunbathing iguanas add to the tranquil experience. The menu includes a variety of chicken, beef and seafood dishes, all in the style of Guerrero-state cuisine. Pozole, the Guerrero soup made with hominy and either pork or chicken, is available on Thursdays.

just the facts, ma'am: El Pueblito is open daily for lunch and dinner, from 12 pm to 10 pm. Live music every night. Thursday is Pozole day, and the volume of the music is pumped up quite a bit with really large speakers.

don't miss: The shrimp cocktail has a picante kick to it, and goes down real well with a cold beer. The coppola filet is a fish fillet with a unique peanut-y sauce that is delicious.

($$$) Because Zihuatanejo is a fishing village, there are numerous seafood restaurants to choose from, but Jarocho is unique in that it is Vera Cruzana seafood. The beautiful architecture with exposed wood and Segusino furniture provides a lovely setting for this casual dining experience. (All furniture and artwork is for sale at Segusino, also owned by Jaime Eskauriatza.) The menu includes a wide variety of seafood, steaks, and, on Sundays, paella.

($$$$) A great option for an elegant night out with a bay view is the restaurant at Kau Kan. Walk through the front door to a breezy bar and foyer that has interesting art work and a great spot for watching the sunset. The restaurant is upstairs, and sports an even better view, and is tastefully decorated to provide a candlelit dinner. The menu has some exciting and unique dishes, such as fresh tuna rolls stuffed with sea bass tartar, black bean soup with chipotle cream, and stingray in black butter sauce.

just the facts, ma'am: Kau Kan is open daily for dinner from 6 pm and is open for lunch during high season. Reservations recommended but not required.

don't miss: The grilled tuna in balsamic vinaigrette is delicious, but the showstopper is the dessert: profiterole with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. Also, the view and the service are excellent.

($$) For an inexpensive meal that is away from the crowds of tourists check out La Cabaña de Otero. This outdoor restaurant is located in the shady front garden of a residential neighborhood and is mostly frequented by local Mexicans. The lunch menu varies daily, but generally provides a choice of three traditional dishes made with pork, chicken, beef or vegetables. The chicken in creamy chipotle sauce is a tasty dish on the picante side, and is served over rice. All meals are served with queso fresco, beans and homemade tortillas.

just the facts, ma'am: La Cabaña de Otero is open daily except Mondays for breakfast, lunch and early dinners, from 9 am to 5 pm. On Sundays, the menu includes barbecued lamb.

don't miss: The fried fish is a whole fish, generally red snapper, cooked with garlic until it is deliciously crispy. It is not always available, but if you ask in advance, they’ll make sure they have it.

($-$$) La Casa Cafe has become a vacationer and expatriate's staple, offering a balanced mix of gringo-style breakfasts, deli sandwiches and wraps, and Mexican favorites in a quiet courtyard-style restaurant. Owners Lorna and Pedro are great for directions, travel advice, and Zihua stories. Major sporting events are shown on a large flat panel tv during special extended hours and they also occasionally also have night time live music events.

just the facts, ma'am: open Tuesday-Sunday, serving 9 am - 2 pm; La Casa Cafe is one of the few nonsmoking restaurants in Zihua.

don't miss: the coffee! Casa Cafe's slogan is "Life's too short to drink bad coffee" and they take this sentiment seriously with strong brewed americano plus a wide range of espresso-based drinks. From the menu, the homemade multigrain bread and bagels are a hit with customers who try in vain to pry the recipes from Lorna.

($$$) There are just a few places here in Zihua where you can get just steaks and barbecued ribs, but thanks to the new Restaurant La Costilla de Adán (translated Adán’s Rib), we have one more option. Owner Adrián Romero Hernández has come up with a meaty menu that keeps you coming back for more. In addition to some unusual soups, salads and appetizers, the menu includes a variety of cuts of steak and several rib options, and your choice of pepper, honey mustard, or barbecue sauce.

just the facts, ma'am: La Costilla de Adán is open every day from 2 to 10:30 pm. The lounge upstairs has comfy couches and is a nice place to “chill” over happy hour (2 for 1 beer and domestic drinks from 7 to 9 pm). The restaurant is completely enclosed, to keep in the cool A/C, but airy and spacious enough that it’s not too much of a distraction that smoking is permitted and there are ashtrays on every table. Parking is available.

don't miss: The waiter recommended the baby back ribs with barbecue sauce, and it was absolutely delicious. Also delish was the side order of mushrooms with chilies – I don’t know what the glaze was made of, but I can’t wait to have it again.

The restaurant practices the international tradition of "Slow Food" making everything fresh and to order in their open-plan hot and cold kitchens. Every dish is an original La Gula recipe from the empanadas criollas (pasta filled with shrimp, vegetables and string cheese, with pineapple & ginger cold sauce) to the mignon punta madera (filet mignon with "Atoyac" coffee sauce). The menu is filled with surprising appetizers, salads, soups, and entrees, topped off with truly decadant desserts. Most surprising, though, is the generous servings paired with equally generous prices.

($$) Restaurant and bar, La Langosta, is a great option for an afternoon of fun in the sun on Playa Larga. Located right on the beach, they serve a variety of seafood, made in so many different ways that everyone is bound to find a favorite. The menu includes local dishes such as tiritas (tiny strips of raw fish in lime juice and chopped onion) and their version of pescado a la talla called talla adobada (a whole fish wrapped in foil and cooked with mild seasonings). Walk on the beach, play in the pool or hang out in a hammock while spending the afternoon drinking cool cervezas or limonadas and watching the dolphins swim by.

just the facts, ma'am: open daily from 10 am to 6:30/7 pm. Kids' pool and adult pools included. The jukebox can get a bit loud at times, but they are always happy to turn it down when asked.

don't miss: the camaronillas are made with fresh shrimp, a gently spicey red sauce and wrapped in masa (used for making corn tortillas). The breaded shrimp has just a light crunch and is delicious.

($$) Chinese food in Mexico, you ask? If you live in Zihua, the answer is “heck yeah”! Man (and woman) cannot live on Mexican food alone, and thanks to places like Mi Chayito, we don’t have to. Mi Chayito’s menu does include Mexican food, but the main nighttime draw is the Chinese food, with familiar favorites such as pot stickers, spring rolls, mushu pork, sweet and sour chicken and Szechwan beef. The menu has recently been broadened to include new dishes such as hot braised eggplant with green beans and ginger beef.

just the facts, ma'am: Mi Chayito is open daily from 10 am to 10 pm. If you prefer to eat at home, they are happy to pack up your food to go.

The restaurant and children’s pool is located on the beach side of the road, while tables, lawn chairs and the adult sized pool is located across the road. The restaurant serves a variety of seafood and the staff is happy to serve you at either location.

A small row of small, family-run restaurants that serve dirt-cheap, extremely good, and wholey authentic Mexican food with little fanfare, save the occasional wandering troubadour, juggler, or gaggle of playing children. Although the prices have risen in recent years, you can still get a hearty meal of enchiladas, sopes, tamales, or tostadas for under 20 pesos (including a glass of agua de jamaica, naranja, o horchata and a large steaming bowl of pozole for about 22 pesos. Pozole blanco with chicken or pork is served every day while the more savory (and spicy!) pozole verde and pozolo rojo are served on the traditional Thursday.

just the facts, ma'am: Although some of the restaurants also serve lunch, most take siesta before the alley comes to life at dusk through the late supper hours. During Mexican holidays and on most Sunday nights, you might have to wait for a table - or be friendly and share!

don't miss: everyone has their favorite restaurant on Pozole Alley so make sure to try each one to find your pick. My favorite is three restaurants in from Nicholas Bravo because of the delicious salsas, including a muy picante salsa verde and a refreshing, chunky ensalada jitomate (tomato salsa). In fact, I often request baggies of the salsa to take home from my eggs the next morning!

($$-$$$) Zihuatanejo is blessed with numerous great restaurants overlooking the Zihuatanejo Bay and Puerto del Sol is one of our favorites. Perched above Playa La Ropa, you can watch the sun set, or watch the twinkling lights over the bay and the city while you enjoy your meal. The menu includes a variety of Mexican-style seafood, chicken and beef dishes, as well as a few pasta dishes.

just the facts, ma'am: Puerta Del Sol is open daily for dinner from 5 to 11 pm.

don't miss: Flambé! You can start with a house Caesar salad (prepared at your table), have pepper steak (flambéed at your table), move onto bananas flambé for dessert (also done at your table) and finish with a flaming Spanish coffee. It is quite the hot -caliente! - experience.

($$) For a fabulous beachfront meal on La Ropa, without the fancy hotel prices, check out Restaurant El Manglar. Take the bridge from La Ropa across the crocodile estuary, and you enter this spacious, shaded restaurant. Choose from a full menu of seafood, chicken and steaks made in the traditional Mexican style and also with a little flare.

just the facts, ma'am: El Manglar is located alongside a lagoon, which is the crocodile estuary. Mosquito repellent is suggested, as it is suggested anywhere near standing water. But don’t worry about the crocs, they are well fed and are just there to look at.

don't miss: The 27-spice tuna steak with homemade teriyaki sauce is delicious and totally unique. After your meal, relax in a hammock and watch the local wildlife, which includes birds, iguana and crocodiles. Also, El Manglar is the only place on La Ropa that has free wireless internet access.

meet me @: Open daily except Wednesdays for lunch and dinner from 12 noon to 9 pm. El Manglar is located on Playa La Ropa and can be reached by crossing the bridge at the far end of the beach. If you’re going by car or taxi, cross under the yellow arch at the far side of the road to La Ropa, go right, and take the first left. The entrance to El Manglar will be on your right and is sign-posted as the restaurant and an RV park.

($$$) Canadian owner/chef Deborah has developed some tasty twists on the traditional Mexican favorites in this airy restaurant in Ixtapa. Menu items for breakfast, lunch and dinner include the traditional (such as breakfast burritos & enchiladas) and the unique (like chili relleños with lobster and shrimp). The broad selection is certain to satisfy all tastebuds.

just the facts, ma'am: open daily from 8 am until 11 pm. It can be crowded at dinner time during high season, but it’s worth the wait for a table.

don't miss: piña colada pancakes, orange chipotle shrimp and Deborah’s award-winning chocolate cake.

($$) If you’re tired of the touristy crowds, but still want an authentic, delicious and affordable meal in a tranquil, tropical setting, you must try Pollocoa in Coacoyul. Located off the beaten track, the slogan at Pollocoa is “Lo Mejor en Pollo” (The Best in Chicken) and they are not exaggerating. Chicken comes grilled, breaded, in a creamy poblano sauce, with mole, as chicken cordon bleu, or any other way you wish to have it prepared. The menu also includes a full range of appetizers, salads, seafood, steaks and Sunday pork specials. For an extra cost ($50 pesos per adult and $25 pesos per child) you can use their swimming pool for as long as you want. The shallow end is partitioned off from the deep end, and is just shallow enough for a 2 1/2-year-old (mine to be precise) to stand up in without water wings. While waiting for your meal, or to burn off some of the calories after you eat, you can stroll the grassy grounds and watch the farm animals at the back of the property. They include turkeys, chicken, roosters, parrots, and most interestingly, ostriches. You can also while away your time watching the cooks work in the open-air kitchen, which is built around the natural rock formations originally on the property.

just the facts, ma'am: Restaurant Pollocoa is open every day, from 9:30am to 6pm. At the moment it is one of the undiscovered gems of Zihua, so it is never crowded, and sometimes you can have the whole pool area to yourself. Free wifi is available, as is shaded parking. Parties are welcome and include the cost of the pool. The six on-sight bungalows also have free access to the pool and wifi. Most of the restaurant and the restrooms are wheelchair accessible.

don't miss: The homemade pico de gallo is fabulous and has a surprising touch of oregano in it. The grilled chicken comes as a 1/4 order, 1/2 order or a whole chicken, and is a family favorite. If you want to branch into seafood, the coconut shrimps with mango sauce is a must.

($$) Hamburgers, ribs, chicken, shrimp, and fish - all sizzling right off the grill! Rufo's is a charming outdoor restaurant with rustic bamboo furniture, Japanese-style lanterns, and... did we mention lots of grilled meat?

just the facts, ma'am: Rufo's is open for late lunches and dinner Monday through Saturday. Dishes are served with vegetables, beans, and french fries.

don't miss: the ribs are slathered in sauce and tender enough to just fall off the bone. Make sure to pace yourself while eating the complimentary smoky chipotle salsa with tortilla chips or you won't have room for your meal when it arrives!

($$) Salvador's might be called a "hole in the wall" restaurant - if it had any walls! With just a cluster of tables and chairs under an awning, there is no ostentation about Salvador's - just hearty, authentic Mexican food and cold beer and soft drinks. Fishermen can also bring their latest catch for Salvador to prepare and serve fresh off the grill.

just the facts, ma'am: Salvador's is open from 9 am until 9 am (mas o menos), Monday through Saturday.

don't miss: the enchiladas verde and camaronillas are arguably some of the best in Zihua while the guacamole has a picante kick from an abundant use of chiles.

($) Tradition rules on Thursdays at Santa Prisca with verde (green) and blanco (white) pozole served at this hole in the wall basement restaurant. All orders of the Guerrerro-native soup come with a plate of appetizers including miniature chile relleños (made from picante jalapeños!), taquitos, chicharrones (pork rinds), avocado, and tortilla chips with bean sauce. Don't come if you're in a hurry or want a quiet afternoon because lingering and loud music is part of the Thursday ritual.

just the facts, ma'am: opens on Thursday afternoons at 2 until the pozole runs out. There's an unpredicatable ambiance here which is half the fun of going regularly: sometimes it's a rockin' fiesta til after midnight, sometimes a slow, sweaty afternoon of leisure (and soup!).

don't miss: live music from popular local musicians, a shot of their own mezcal especially brought in from Taxco, or a large pitcher of the freshly made and unbelievably addictive limonada.

meet me @: Santa Prisca is located in Colonia el Limon on the inbound lateral of 200, Avenida Victor Hugo. Most cab drivers know how to get there and will likely drop you in front of a hardware store. Go next door and follow the music down the stairs.

($$) Sitting on the beach, under an umbrella, watching the waves roll on and the people walk past you on Paseo de Pescador can be fun in most restaurants, but for some reason the umbrellas at Restaurant Tata’s seem more inviting. This seafood restaurant has a wide variety of tasty seafood, and if you’re not up for a full meal, an appetizer and drink would be worth the visit.

just the facts, ma'am: Tata’s is open daily from 8:30 am – 10:30 or 11 pm.

don't miss: Tata’s is a great location for people watching and boat watching on Playa Principal. The shrimp cocktail is a nice snack on a hot day and the waitstaff is pleasant.

($$$) If you find yourself in Troncones in the mood for a meal, we highly recommend that you check out Tropic of Cancer. The restaurant tables surround the pool, and are on the beach, and all are shady and breezy. You can swim in the pool while waiting for your meal, or take a walk on the beach and play in the ocean. The menu includes a variety of Mexican seafood, chicken and beef dishes, and all are delicious.

just the facts, ma'am: The restaurant at Tropic of Cancer is open daily except Tuesdays for lunch and dinner. Wireless internet also available -- just ask for the password for access.

don't miss: The Tropic of Cancer takes a decidedly modern twist on camaronillas: they are made with light and crispy phyllo dough, and comes with a soy and garlic dipping sauce. They're unique, delicious, and definitely not to be missed.
